  16. The Epson Scanner Utility package works invisibly with your
  17. operating system to communicate with your Epson scanner.  And if
  18. you are using Windows 3.0 or 3.1, the Epson Scanner Utility
  19. provides Epson TWAIN, a driver allowing you to scan images from
  20. your Epson scanner into your TWAIN compliant application without
  21. leaving the application.
  22.  
  23. The Epson Scanner Utility supports several interfaces to your
  24. scanner, without requiring a separate driver for each. Supported
  25. interfaces include:
  26.  
  27.      -Epson bi-directional parallel interface (B808011)
  28.      -Adaptec AHA-1510 SCSI host adapter
  29.      -IBM PS/2 built-in bi-directional parallel interface
  30.  
  31. Additionally, the Epson Scanner Utility provides a SCANTEST program
  32. to let you confirm that your scanner and interface are set up
  33. properly. You should run SCANTEST after you have installed the
  34. Epson Scanner Utility. 
  35.  
  36. The Epson Scanner Utility provides support for the following Epson
  37. scanners (some models may not be available in your area):
  38.  
  39.      -ES-800C  -GT-8000  -GT-4000
  40.      -ES-600C  -GT-6500
  41.      -ES-300C  -GT-6000

  43. What You Will Install
  44.  
  45. You need to install different elements of the Epson Scanner
  46. Utility, depending on the operating system and the interface you
  47. are using with your scanner. This chart outlines what you have to
  48. install.

  59. Special Considerations for SCSI Adapters
  60.  
  61. You may have one or more SCSI adapters already installed in your
  62. computer. If you do, please note the following:
  63.  
  64. --   If you already have an Adaptec SCSI adapter and software
  65.      installed in your computer, connect your scanner to the bus
  66.      for that adapter. Do not install another adapter for your
  67.      scanner.
  68.  
  69.      When you run the Setup program in Windows, you'll be prompted
  70.      to select loading the Adaptec ASPI DOS Manager or using
  71.      existing SCSI support software. Select "Use Existing SCSI
  72.      Support Software."
  73.  
  74. --   If you have two or more SCSI adapters installed in your
  75.      computer, make sure you connect the scanner to the SCSI bus
  76.      of the first (primary) adapter.
  77.  
  78. How to Install the Epson Scanner Utility
  79.  
  80. If you are using Windows 3.0 or 3.1 with TWAIN compliant
  81. applications, the Epson Scanner Utility Setup program for Windows
  82. installs everything you need.  If you are using an Adaptec SCSI
  83. host adapter, the Setup program prompts you to insert the Adaptec
  84. diskette to install the ASPI DOS Manager software.
  85.  
  86. If you are using DOS with your Epson scanner, the INSTALL program
  87. installs your Scanner DOS Device Driver. If you are using an
  88. Adaptec SCSI adapter as your interface, you must manually install
  89. the ASPI DOS Manager software on the Adaptec diskette according to
  90. the instructions in your Adaptec Software manual.

  92. Note
  93. Do not install any of the Epson Scanner Utility files using the DOS
  94. copy command. You must use Setup in Windows or INSTALL in DOS to
  95. convert the files to the correct format.

  97. More detailed installation instructions for both TWAIN and DOS
  98. support are provided in the following sections.

  100. What is Epson TWAIN?
  101.  
  102. TWAIN is an open industry interface that directly acquires image
  103. data from external sources without forcing  you to leave the
  104. software application. Epson TWAIN provides this 'plug and play'
  105. functionality for Epson scanners and TWAIN compliant applications
  106. in the Windows 3.0 and 3.1 environments.
  107.  
  108. Installing Epson TWAIN
  109.  
  110. The Epson TWAIN Setup program installs the following:
  111.  
  112.      -Epson Scanner DOS Device Driver
  113.      -Epson TWAIN
  114.      -Adaptec ASPI DOS Manager (if you are using an Adaptec SCSI
  115.       adapter)
  116.  
  117. Use the following procedures to install Epson TWAIN from within
  118. Windows.
  119.  
  120. 1.   Start Windows.
  121.  
  122. 2.   Select the Run option in the File menu of the Program Manager.
  123.  
  124. 3.   Type the appropriate drive name followed by SETUP in the
  125.      Command Line dialog.  For example, type A:SETUP or B:SETUP.
  126.  
  127. 4.   Press ENTER or select OK.
  128.  
  129. 5.   Follow the instructions on the installation screens to install
  130.      Epson TWAIN. Click Help to display more information about each
  131.      screen.
  132.  
  133.      If you are installing Epson TWAIN for an Adaptec SCSI adapter,
  134.      the Setup program prompts you to insert the Adaptec diskette
  135.      when needed.
  136.  
  137. 6.   When the installation is complete, reboot your computer.
  138.  
  139. 7.   Return to Windows. Start your TWAIN compliant application and
  140.      select the Epson Scanners as the "acquire device." The wording
  141.      of the menu selections varies from application to application.
  142.  
  143. Now, when you select Acquire from the File menu within your
  144. application, you'll be able to scan the image on your scanner and
  145. insert it into your document.
  146.  
  147. Note
  148. If you delete any of the files needed for the Epson Scanner
  149. Utility, you'll need to re-install the utility using Setup.
  150.  
  151. What is the Epson Scanner DOS Device Driver?
  152.  
  153. The Epson Scanner DOS Device Driver provides support for multiple
  154. physical interfaces. Only software that comes with an Epson scanner
  155. driver can use the Epson Scanner DOS Device Driver. TWAIN compliant
  156. software using Epson TWAIN also requires the DOS driver, but Epson
  157. TWAIN installs it automatically during Setup.

  159. Installing the DOS Device Driver
  160.  
  161. Use the following procedures to install the Epson Scanner DOS
  162. Device Driver when you do not have Windows 3.0 or 3.1 and are
  163. installing the Epson Scanner Utility from DOS. Make sure you have
  164. installed your interface (either bi-directional or Adaptec SCSI)
  165. before you perform these procedures.
  166.  
  167. 1.   Insert the Epson Scanner Utility diskette containing the
  168.      device driver into the diskette drive.
  169.  
  170. 2.   From the DOS prompt, type the appropriate drive name, followed
  171.      by INSTALL. For example, type A:INSTALL or B:INSTALL.
  172.  
  173. 3.   Press ENTER.
  174.  
  175. 4.   Follow the instructions on the screen.
  176.  
  177. 5.   When installation is complete, reboot your computer.
  178.  
  179. As your computer starts, you'll see a message similar to this one
  180. briefly displayed on the screen:

  194. What is the ASPI DOS Manager?
  195.  
  196. The ASPI DOS Manager is a device driver that makes the Adaptec SCSI
  197. Adapter available to DOS as a communication interface to an Epson
  198. scanner.
  199.  
  200. You only need to install the ASPI DOS Manager if you are installing
  201. an Adaptec SCSI Adapter for the first time and you are installing
  202. the Epson Scanner Utility from DOS. The Setup program from Windows
  203. installs the ASPI DOS Manager automatically.

  205. Installing the ASPI DOS Manager
  206.  
  207. Please refer to your Adaptec manual for complete installation
  208. instructions for the ASPI DOS Manager.
  209.  
  210. Running SCANTEST
  211.  
  212. SCANTEST confirms that the scanner and the device driver are
  213. installed correctly. SCANTEST bypasses any other software program
  214. to test just the physical connection to the scanner.
  215.  
  216. Before you run SCANTEST, make sure
  217.  
  218. --   the Epson Scanner Utility software is installed
  219. --   you are using an EGA or VGA video display
  220. --   your scanner is connected to your computer and is turned on
  221. --   the image you want to scan is on the scanner
  222.  
  223. Follow these steps to run SCANTEST:
  224.  
  225. 1.   In Windows, start SCANTEST using the Run option in the Program
  226.      Manager's File menu.
  227.  
  228.      From the DOS prompt, type the appropriate drive name, followed
  229.      by SCANTEST.  Then press ENTER.
  230.  
  231.      If you installed Epson TWAIN, the SCANTEST program is in the
  232.      TWAIN subdirectory of your Windows directory. If you installed
  233.      only the DOS Device Driver, the SCANTEST program is on your
  234.      Epson Scanner Utility diskette.
  235.  
  236. 2.   If your scanner, interface, and drivers are working properly,
  237.      the scanner scans the image and displays it on your screen.
  238.  
  239. 3.   Press any key to quit SCANTEST.
  240.  
  241. If you have problems scanning an image using SCANTEST, check that
  242. the scanner is turned on and connected with the correct cable. See
  243. your scanner manual for troubleshooting information.
